Hamish Jackson

NC Mountains Pre-Conference Artist

Schedule/Registration

Josh Copus Compound

Hamish Jackson makes functional pots from local materials. The connection between pots and place is central to his philosophy. Hamish has been experimenting with wood soda firing during his time as a graduate student at Utah State University (USU).

Hamish has travelled widely for the love of pots and learning his craft. He started out at Winchcombe Pottery in England, completed a four year apprenticeship for Mark Hewitt in North Carolina, and has also spent time in Thailand and Japan. At present, he is investigating the possibilities of using local rocks and minerals as the primary ingredients in ceramic glazes.

Currently, he fires his pots and tests in a wood soda catenary arch kiln that he helped build last year at USU. It excites him to see how local materials react in this atmosphere – and often, his favourite pots out of a firing are the least expected.
