Peter Callas is an American pioneer of the Anagram kiln, credited with building the first in 1976 and subsequently firing over 150 kilns on four continents over 40 years. After graduating from the University of Puget Sound in 1973, he spent a year-long residency at The Archie Bray Foundation. Peter then traveled throughout Japan for two months in 1974 where he was introduced to woodfire and the Anagram. In 1979 he partnered with Peter Voulkos, which led to a 23 year collaboration that produced work that today is widely recognized as Voulkos' most successful and exuberant. Callas has come to be recognized as a foremost authority in the field of ceramics with exhibitions in the U.S., Japan, Korea, China, Germany, France, Brazil, Denmark, Hungary and Australia. His work is in many public and private collections worldwide.
