My art reflects the influence of my childhood in Japan and of the rigorous discipline of an apprenticeship in traditional Japanese pottery. Working with clay and wood firing has become a way of life. My home, studio and anagama are in Kent, Connecticut. For 48 years, my work with clay has challenged and nurtured me, enriched and transformed my life. The work has evolved from vessels and animal shapes to figurative work and abstract wall reliefs. For 30 years I have also been working in bronze—most recently in China, where I am making larger-than-life size figures for public spaces. The work speaks to me of that peaceful place within- calm, open, aware.
Joy Brown has exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States, Europe, Japan, and China. Her figures and three-dimensional wall installations are represented in private and public collections, displayed in parks, sculpture gardens, and urban public spaces around the world. In 1998 she co-founded Still Mountain Center, a nonprofit art organization to foster East-West artistic exchange.
